Oxfam reaction to Green Climate Fund vote in Senate State Foreign Operations

By

In reaction to the Green Climate Fund amendment just approved in the 2016 State, Foreign Operations and Related Programs committee spending bill today, Heather Coleman, Oxfam America’s Climate Change Policy Manager, made the following statement:

“The Senate has demonstrated today with a bipartisan 16-14 vote that the US is willing to stand up as a leader in bringing all countries to the table to achieve ambitious climate action. The Green Climate Fund will support millions of people in poor and vulnerable communities around the world who are hit first and worst by climate change.

“Amendment cosponsors Senators Merkley, Kirk, Durbin and Feinstein, as well as supporters including Senators Collins, Leahy and Udall, deserve heartfelt thanks for their leadership and today’s success in stripping harmful language out of the bill regarding US contributions to the Fund.

“Oxfam will continue to push for US support of the Green Climate Fund and advocate on the importance of a fair and equitable international fund to help poor countries transition to low-carbon pathways and build climate resilient economies.”
