Oxfam reaction to passage of Green Climate Fund amendment in Senate appropriations committee

By

In response to the Senate appropriations committee passing the Green Climate Fund amendment, Oxfam America’s Climate Policy Manager, Heather Coleman made the following statement:

“Today, Oxfam welcomes bipartisan support from the Senate appropriations committee to provide further funding of $500 million to the Green Climate Fund, a finance mechanism that provides developing countries with support to build low-carbon, climate resilience economies. However, Oxfam is disappointed that members were not able to agree on a funding level of $750 million as was requested in the President’s budget.

“Co-sponsored by Senators Merkley (D-OR), Kirk (R-IL), Collins (R-ME), Udall (D-NM), Durbin (D-IL), Shaheen (D-NH) and Leahy (D-VT), this funding will build upon the investment of $500 million made last year towards the $3 billion the Obama Administration has pledged to the Green Climate Fund.

“This amendment is an important step forward towards ensuring that Congress continues to appropriate funds on an annual basis to support people who are being hit first and worst by the impacts of climate change. It’s important that the US continues to provide climate leadership and implements the historic international climate agreement made in Paris last December.”
