Oxfam reaction to the US second payment to the Green Climate Fund

By

In response to the US Government delivering its second Green Climate Fund payment, Oxfam America’s Climate Change Manager, Heather Coleman, made the following statement:

"Today, Oxfam applauds the US government’s second payment towards our $3 billion commitment to the Green Climate Fund, a Fund that supports international climate cooperation and builds climate resilience in poor, vulnerable communities around the world.

"The Green Climate Fund helps to foster peace, stability and security both in the US and abroad by investing in climate resilient, low-emissions economies. It builds on a longstanding bipartisan commitment to invest in human and economic security around the world.

"The amount paid-in today, $500 million, constitutes only 0.012% of the federal budget each year, or $1.53 per American.  In comparison, the US government provided $18.5 billion in fossil fuel production subsidies in 2013 – that’s $58.45 per American.

"As countries around the world work to cope with increasing numbers of climate-change related disasters, the US must continue to honor our commitments to international climate action."
