Oxfam reaction to the US’s first payment delivery to the Green Climate Fund

By

In response to the US Government signing the agreement to deliver its first Green Climate Fund payment, Oxfam America’s Climate Policy Manager, Heather Coleman made the following statement:

“Today, Oxfam applauds the US Government for delivering on its first payment towards the $3 billion pledged to the Green Climate Fund, an important step to ensuring developing countries are able to build a more climate-resilient, clean energy future.

“The poorest half of the world’s population – 3.5 billion people – is responsible for just 10 percent of global carbon emissions yet they are most threatened by the catastrophic storms, droughts, and other severe weather shocks linked to climate change. As one of the world’s biggest carbon emitters, the US is acting upon its moral duties to ensure those least responsible are protected.

“While this first payment towards the Green Climate Fund is a huge step in the right direction, it’s important the US continues to be a climate leader and appropriate the necessary funds on an annual basis for those on the frontlines of climate change.”
