Oxfam statement on the recent United Nations report highlighting a sharp increase in hunger around the world

By

In reaction to the recent United Nations report highlighting a sharp increase in hunger around the world, Oxfam America’s President Abby Maxman, made the following statement:

“The fact that the number of hungry people has spiked for the first time in a decade should be sobering and shameful to us all.

“From income inequality to violent conflicts, from droughts to floods, our world is in crisis. Now is the time to redouble our efforts to invest in the resilience of farmers and communities around the world.

“At a time of increasing hunger, the US Congress must bolster -- not cut -- life-saving foreign aid that not only helps people in crisis, but also prevents crises in the first place. President Trump’s proposed budget to de-fund anti-hunger and agriculture investments will only exacerbate this horrible crisis, deepening the despair in the lives of millions around the world.

“Oxfam is working and will continue to work with small-scale farmers, community leaders, refugees and others- who have warned that the combination of climate change, conflict, hunger and poverty is increasingly becoming a frightening daily reality. Hunger and poverty must be tackled by all of us together. Our generation has the tools and resources to defeat hunger and we must continue to work to invest in solutions.”
