In response to the passing of UNSC Resolution on Yemen, Oxfam’s Senior Humanitarian Policy Advisor Kathryn Achilles, said:
“Oxfam welcomes the resolution passed today in support of the peace process, and acknowledging the dire humanitarian situation in Yemen. It is long overdue and much needed. All parties must adhere to the encouraging agreements they made in Stockholm and act urgently to ease the hunger and suffering of the Yemeni people. We are grateful to the Security Council, and in particular to the United Kingdom for its leadership, for supporting the agreements made in Stockholm.
"But this Resolution leaves unfinished business. After three and a half years of silence, this Resolution does not go far enough in demanding accountability for violations of international humanitarian law. And with the looming risk of an immense famine, it does not appropriately convey the urgency of revitalizing Yemen’s economy or removing restrictions from its air and sea ports. Council members need to move past politics and concentrate on the people caught in the crisis.
“The parties to the conflict, their backers and the international community now need to work together to prioritize improving the situation for Yemen's people who continue to pay the price of this bloody war.”
